The Red Chair by Lance Lewin

April 2019 - The Red Chair

About the Image(s)

Captured from a second floor balcony of a museum - though I was tempted to run downstairs and "arrange" the chairs or make them perfectly straight - I did not - and feel very satisfied with that decision. What caught my attention was 1. the vivid colors and 2. the one out of place chair.

The out of place chair among the others made me realized perhaps someone had just used it - got up, and left the chair out - instead of replacing it. This visual arrangement and imagined history, immediately softened the rigid-like conformity of the rest of the chairs and single table, making the the scene a bit more relaxing and less isolated. At least for me - you may have a different interpretation - or, none at all.

The scene is cropped through the viewfinder: 5D Mark II ISO-100 @35mm F/4.5 1/15sec (hand held very carefully); Post-Production: increase luminosity and remove a slight green hue from florescent lighting. That's it!

Lance. I too would have been tempted to rearrange to satisfy my anal obsession for symmetry. However, you made the right decision. The slight offset and angle of the table engages me. The single tipped chair is the coup de gras. I, probably would have cleaned up the shadow on the lower right, which is a slight distraction to me.   Posted: 04/06/2019 09:11:38

Hi Lance, This is a great image. I agree with Mike about the right side, it is distracting. You probably just missed it. I can't believe you hand held it. It is tack sharp. I love the color combination. It gets your immediate attention. This is the kind of photography I want to do.   Posted: 04/06/2019 10:37:21

Hello.

Yup, I see that shadow - actually, never saw that till now. I never did anything with with photo after initial post production, thus a lack of seeing that barely visible patch.
