Death Valley sand dunes by Jack Florence Jr

April 2021 - Death Valley sand dunes

About the Image(s)

This is probably my favorite place to shoot, and I always carry my iPhone as a wider lens option, as I shoot with primes on my regular camera, and like to avoid changing lenses out on the sand dunes as much as possible.

The iPhone is great for wide vistas like this one, though I’m afraid the light wasn’t at its best yet, but hopefully it makes for a good travel image, giving one a sense of the place

My favorite place to take photos is down on the sea wall in a storm. I have a rather similar problem to you.....after taking photos with one of my good cameras and then having to have it professionally cleaned, I now only take my phone (and tripod)!
I just love the sand patterns and the way the wind has sculpted the sand hills!
I'm wondering if you need the mountains behinds your subject is the sand?
Have you thought of cropping the image and adding a little more contrast to make it more dramatic?   Posted: 04/04/2021 18:17:03

Thanks Phillipa.
Good point about the mountains, I usually try to avoid them, but have better luck with longer lenses. I find the wider phone lens gives me too much foreground, to my taste anyway. I will take a look at upping the contrast a bit.   Posted: 04/04/2021 18:23:20

I can certainly see why you like this place! What an abundance of opportunities. It must change constantly (and I would hate that sand in the lens). I love the overall scene, but I also see many images in this one. The patterns made by the wind are beautiful, and I can only suggest trying some selected closeups. That said, you may prefer wide vista's, and it does give a good sense of the area. As is, I would use a bit if dodge/burn in the distant mountains to define them more through the haze.   Posted: 04/07/2021 18:01:40

The sand dunes with different patterns and shadows are very interesting! I especially like the details of the sand that are like sea waves in the foreground. I agree with Phill's comments that the mountains do not add much to the beautiful sand dunes. I'd prefer to crop tighter to show only the sand dunes.

An interesting image ; I would go with trying to dehaze the mountains as I like the full view of the area.   Posted: 04/16/2021 10:34:37

Nice place to shoot. I agree about the fact that a few adjustments with contrast, clarity, and dehaze could be used to fine tune it a bit.   Posted: 04/18/2021 10:16:17

I've never yearned to go to a place called "Death Valley", but you sure shot a dramatic image, Jack! I tried looking at it with just the horizon at the top and the sky & mountains cropped off. I agree with some of the others that it has more impact without the full shot. I like the great amount of detail you captured in this shot and the sense of motion in the stillness!   Posted: 04/18/2021 13:06:52
