Thorp - Splawn Pioneer Cemetery by Bob Patrick

February 2021 - Thorp - Splawn Pioneer Cemetery

About the Image(s)

Thorp - Splawn Pioneer Cemetery, Sept. 2019, 7 something PM, Phantom 4 Pro, 1/40 sec F4. Cropped in PS.

The white stone is for M/M Fielden Thorp. Thorp was the first white man to settle in Kittitas County, WA. He came west with the Splawns in 1844. If you find the book "Ka-Mi-Akin Last Hero of the Yakimas", author Jack Splawn, and care to read it, the text is pretty much eye witness history of the relationship between the Native Americans and Whites for the 19th Century in this region.

Hello Bob,
I like this image. I like the composition and the mood, I think it has an eerie feeling to it. To my eye it could be lightened up some, perhaps a full f stop. I think doing so would still show the late night while showing some more details in the deep shadows.   Posted: 02/04/2021 07:33:24

Guess I need to retrain the Color Monkey. Lisa warned me this was dark. The posted version is quite a bit darker than what I saw on my monitor.

FAA now frowns upon night flying. Looking at the specter of regulations taking effect in two years, I wonder if it will be worth the trouble to make drone images. I think the "Big Brother Syndrome" is about to get much tougher.   Posted: 02/04/2021 11:30:26

Hi Bob,
I pretty much agree with Lou and Lisa's original comment to you. I took a screen copy and tried to brighten the shadows a bit, without losing the mood you were intending.

Several years ago I tried using a color calibration workflow. My use of it yielded worse prints than before, so I abandoned it.

Regarding the future of drone flying at night, I guess we are going to have to learn to create the illusion during post processing. :-)   Posted: 02/05/2021 16:58:04
