Douglas County Farm by Bob Patrick

November 2020 - Douglas County Farm

About the Image(s)

JPEG, shot (October 18) on the Phantom 4 Pro (Drone 7 still flying), aperture priority ISO 400, F8, 1/250 sec. Cropped and adjusted contrast in PS 5.1.
The abandoned farm is barely visible from Hwy 2 westbound, in Douglas County. Stopped on the shoulder, and flew the drone about 1/2 mile into the farm. Shot video and a few stills. One the way out the drone camera picked up an access road I had missed while driving on the Hwy. Although the subject is front lighted in this shot, it's not too flat. I liked the diagonal lines and detail, so here's my offering, even if front lighting isn't my favorite.

Hi Bob, I think this is a great image. I love the subject and the composition. Personally, I would consider this to be more side lighting, I think it shows good details in the structures. I think the angle you have used, from the front quarter of the structure, gives a 3 dimensional view. I wouldn't change anything about this image. I think you find some wonderful subjects.   Posted: 11/03/2020 18:44:05

Lou, you're correct. It looks more like 45 degrees to camera angle.   Posted: 11/13/2020 12:18:28

Bob, I wish I had scenes like this where I live near Los Angeles. There is nothing about the shot composition etc that I would change. But (there is always a but) if I had captured this scene, I would have increased the saturation and contrast - that is my preference. I think it adds to its impact. I uploaded what it would have looked like. Ignore the cropping.   Posted: 11/06/2020 11:59:19

So you took this photo beyond the VLOS limits? Not passing judgement at all when you are flying over an uninhabited area. I would just be too scared of losing my Mavic to do this.

I get nervous when I look down at my remote display, then look up and have to take a few seconds to find my Mavic. :-)   Posted: 11/06/2020 12:09:33

"Damn Yankee Laws"! Sometimes, if you want the picture, you have to take a risk.   Posted: 11/06/2020 12:22:29
