October 2020 - Hot Air Balloons

About the Image(s)

Last September I attended a member’s activity of “Great Prosser Balloon Rally” in Washington State held by PSA Northwest Chapter. This is an annually event, and around 6 o’clock in the morning people gathering in the grassy field. The balloon pilots lay their “envelopes” (special term for Hot Air Balloons) flat on tarps around the launch area while they unloaded baskets and “burners,” the engine that would propel hot air up into the balloon to enable liftoff. Due to the chilly temperature and wind balloons were not allowed to takeoff unfortunately, however I’ve captured most of the exciting moments.
Video was taken by my mobile phone and Canon 5D Mark IV without tripod and gimbal used. Editing with Pr and Ae.

Fun video Peter. Are the sections in between hyper lapses with you camera set up on a tripod or with your phone?   Posted: 09/14/2020 11:24:11

I shot the hyperlapses in this video by handheld my mobile phone without tripod. Just hold the phone and pan. If I used the camera, I would have to use the tripod with fluid head. I guess you may find some footages' motion speedy than normal. Actually those are not shooting by hyperlapses. I shot them 30 fps, then reduce 'Clip Speed/Duration' in editing. Most time I did it to adjust the length of the whole footage to match with the length of audio/music   Posted: 09/29/2020 13:16:33

Oh my, there is much to like in this video. Title was effective. But the uptempo fast forward really gave a great feel of the action of getting this event set up. The shot of the father kneeling and holding his son added a powerful feel of emotion, fun and let me feel connected. (A great personal touch) The shot of the shot of the flame filling the envelop was really well done. As with the father and son the mother with the little girl worked better.

The overall shot at 1:54 really showed off the event quite well.

At 2:06 your low angle shot looking up atthe balloon is excellent. At 2:13 the shot of the balloon from below, then you cut to a photographer taking a similar shot and then having the sequence end with the close up of the little boy's face is all well done.

Your ending shot is a perfect closer.

What I really enjoyed about the video was the multiple angles and intimate moments you created to make the viewer feel like they were at the event. These angles broke up the documentary feel and added excitement. The effort you put in capturing these shots was well rewarded with an excellent video.

I also the music fit the theme.

This video was a great deal of fun to watch.   Posted: 09/23/2020 18:40:26

Hi Peter,
A video that makes me include a bucket list to visit this festival some time in future. A lovely capture and videography with a proper planning. The final outcome was missing though. It is worth watching the show. Quite an experience for me.
Cheers.

Peter,
What an excellent video! I love how you incorporated the hyper lapses into it, giving it an extra feeling of excitement. Your still shots fit in well with the video, showing the smiling, excited faces of everyone there added interest to your story. The music was well suited for the mood of the event.

Well Done !!

Dick
