May 2020 - Journey through current day Yugoslavia

About the Image(s)

Journey through current day Yugoslavia (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia). The Bosnian War, which was my first exposure to wide spread coverage of war on TV and media was rather horrifying and left an indelible memory with me of human rights violation. I had the opportunity to visit Croatia, Bosnia and Slovenia last year and was rather gratified to see how these countries have now morphed to peaceful co-existence. The first part of the video takes you through Bosnia as I narrate some details on the war, you might find it long but this something I wanted to convey since it had impacted me deeply when I was growing up. The background score if the theme music from "Game Of Thrones" which has helped put Croatia very high on the tourism map, so I included it. I hope I am able to share with you the beauty of these countries even though the video quality is poor in most sections.

Rajani,
I think this is an absolutely beautiful video. I probably have a different perspective on this than most, because I have experienced the absolute horrors of war. When I look at this beautiful country side I have tears in my eyes because I think, how can people be so cruel and destructive. When will we ever learn to live in peace. God has given us such beauty and we, because of our stupidity, destroy it.

I could go on and on about how impressed I am with this video, but the purpose of this is to critique and give both positive and negative feedback. So I was going to say that I thought the sound could use a little work. It went from the sounds of water falls to suddenly silence and then the soft singing of birds. Then I realized that this is part of what made this video so special for me. It was like the shooting and killing of war stopped and there was peace. This may not have been your intention but to me it was metaphoric.

Thank You so much for making this video. It has touched my heart very deeply.

Dick,
Really appreciate your feedback, especially given your military background, I am happy to note that you did not find the war narrative too long. It was intentional that I used the theme music from Game of thrones to dramatize during the portion where I talked about the war and showcased Dubrovnik and switched to more natural sounds to signify the peacefulness of the place. But it is an abrupt switch and I should have transitioned better.   Posted: 05/14/2020 16:55:34

Thank you for posting this video. I looks like a great deal of thought and work was put into creating this film.
I really liked the drive through tour as it felt like I was on a journey to arrive at first the towns and the the natural parks. The progression was a fine idea. Some of the angles and the compositions used in the town scenes were excellent. I really liked the night street scenes.

I think the sound track worked quite well until the end. The dramatic, almost militaristic sound in the beginning worked with the message you delivered. The chirping birds worked well in the natural scenes. However the beautiful scenes at the lake at the end I felt needed a musical background. Something soft and dream like would have been perfect. As it is I just felt abandoned.

The color of the text really annoyed me. The black text blended into too many of the scenes especially after the ride along the country roads. I found that I had to chose to either watch the film or read the text. I ended up having to watch the video twice to catch it all. Note: I did not mind watching it twice---it is a fine video but I feel that I should not HAVE to watch it twice. There is a difference. I feel a different color text would have helped. The scenes at Lake Bled at the end were excellent. They made me want to go to the lake immediately. You were clearly there many times to capture all the different moods.

One photographic note----you photographed some beautiful falls and most of the images were very stunning. However there is a scene where you have a large area of completely over exposed white water in the lower right corner. This over exposed water ruin the entire feel of that scene.

You also have a shot of a castle, taken through an archway that is an incredible photo---that is very well seen, by you and well captured.

Much of the borders on outstanding, with a few corrections, that I see as minor, this could be professional.

I'm looking forward to July.   Posted: 05/14/2020 08:34:21

Larry, thank you so much for the detailed feedback, really appreciate it. All your feedback is on point and noted.
1. It was intentional that I used the theme music from Game of thrones to dramatize during the portion where I talked about the war and showcased Dubrovnik and switched to more natural sounds to signify the peacefulness of the place. But it is an abrupt switch and I should have transitioned better and also used better music. Will keep that in mind next time.
2. Noted on the text, will make it more readable in future
3. I know the videos, all shot on the phone was over exposed, not sure which photo you found where exposure is not right, trying to find it to fix   Posted: 05/14/2020 16:59:34

I just went back and watched the video again. I did a screen capture that shows where the waterfall is badly over exposed. Note the lower lower right corner.

Hope this helps.

I still think the video is excellent. :-)   Posted: 05/14/2020 17:26:03

Thank you Larry, yes, the videos I shot of all the waterfalls are very over exposed, it was shot in the middle of the day and I was mainly playing tourist while shooting with my phone and not thinking like a photographer :)   Posted: 05/14/2020 18:05:18

Hi Rajani, a nice introduction of a country that I have heard mostly from news of war torn regions; experienced the terrible and tragic ethnic cleansing of this century. I love the way you have presented the complete presentation. The write up running between the clips and introducing the landmarks and the regions through out give it a special touch. But the footage sometime got blurred due to the video quality. This was the only issue with this presentation. I agree with larry here, the color of the text was kind of irritating, could be little more sooting and contrast depending on the back ground. I understand the footage was by a mobile camera with low resolution. The music is added appropriately. All together a good presentation for a new country. Cheers.   Posted: 05/28/2020 15:15:39
