October 2019 - Light Beckons

About the Image(s)

I Shot a time lapse 2 days ago of the milky way over Pigeon point lighthouse. Tried a transition from day to night this time, it was very hard to do. Hope you like it, made the video longer with still photos :)

Light Beckons: At Pigeon Point Lighthouse, coastal California, USA. Watching the sunset and then the ascend of the milky way. Day to night transition time lapses are hard since the software finds it hard to handle the de-flicker well. So there are some jerky sections. Also it was frustrating with people turning on their torches and light painting the light house when it was already well lit and was not needed. So there is lot of noise pollution also.
Perched on a cliff on the central California coast, 50 miles south of San Francisco, the 115-foot Pigeon Point Lighthouse, one of the tallest lighthouses in America, has been guiding mariners since 1872. Point Lighthouse is one of the most picturesque lighthouses on the Pacific coast. The tower stands on a rocky promontory and has long been a landmark for ships approaching San Francisco Bay from the south. This headland, and hence the lighthouse, took its name from the ship Carrier Pigeon that wrecked here in 1853.

Rajani,
It was a good idea to shoot a time-lapse between day and night. I can image how hard you made this 27" time-lapse. Because lighting was vary you had no way to adjust shutter speed and aperture in the process, but ISO auto, I guess. I also like the stereo sound ocean wave effects.   Posted: 10/24/2019 15:21:18

Rajani,

A very beautifully done (hard to accomplish) technical video. As Peter said, I assume that the transition between day and night was done by using auto ISO. Is that how you did it? I thought is was done brilliantly.

You had mentioned the light pollution from people turning on their torches and light painting the light house. I didn't find it distracting at all. You were capturing the moment as it happened and I thought it turned out really nice.

Another thing that I thought was interesting was the airplanes flying through the video. To me that was more distracting than the light painting. But, as I said you were capturing the moment and they were both out of your control.

Well Done!!
