Hand of Fate by Charles Taylor

August 2019 - Hand of Fate

About the Image(s)

It was taken with my Canon 60D with available light at a local museum.

The disinterest of the passers-by to the picture of the large hand fascinated me.

Hi Charles! Oh, Gee, this is great! Yes, the seemingly, disinterested patrons juxtaposed against the somewhat funny or otherwise gleeful installation, makes a wonderful narrative. As I view it on my large monitor, the exposure is great. Good eye, Charles.

Hello Charles
Good capture, fruit of an observer eye, the movement of the visitors sharpens that feeling of indifference in front of the exposed work.   Posted: 08/18/2019 09:52:55

Charles

I love this image. The positioning of the people is so perfect. What grey street photography. What is that little rectangular block in the lower right third?   Posted: 08/19/2019 12:08:29

A good question - I think it is part of another displayed picture. will go back to the museum and have a look.

I had to remove another object at the top right that was very distracting. I also did not like the cord guarding the picture. However, I am never sure how far we should manipulate an image.

Again thanks all for your comments.   Posted: 08/20/2019 12:46:48

Charles - the cord guarding the installation is fine. That is not a distraction and in fact defines the space.

Again, a lovely composition.   Posted: 08/20/2019 17:30:22

At first, I felt distracted by the people in the image, but after looking at it for a bit more, I found that they really did help make the entire story. Actually, years ago at the Phoenix Art Museum, I shot a similar type of image, where people blurred past the art work. It's always a challenge to capture a publicly available scene without having the composition disturbed by people. Yet, going with the flow seems to present an even more complex, but interesting, story. In my opinion, this is a really thought provoking and appealing image!   Posted: 08/24/2019 20:31:06

Graham, what a great street shot you've made! Love it. I like the motion contrast you used in the image, still and moving. Very good capture. I think making this image b/w is a very good idea as it draws more attention to the subjects than the distraction created by different color schemes. I like your title. You tried a very challenge composition with two passengers passed by. To me I might be able to only handle one passenger. lol Thanks for the sharing Graham, glad that you are back. :)   Posted: 08/31/2019 15:47:19
