Antwerp Harbour view by Dirk-Olaf Leimann, PPSA

August 2019 - Antwerp Harbour view

About the Image(s)

This image is a view from the harbor museum roof to the harbor of Antwerp. I choose this image because I think it is a challenge for bw conversion. The harbor of Antwerp is also the biggest industrial area in Antwerp.

I like the complexity of this image and the range of tones used from darker and heavier on the bottom of the image to lighter on top. You have done a wonderful job achieving separation of the smoke coming out the stacks against the white cloudy background.

I also like the steel grey tones you used.

This image is indeed a challenge! Not so much perhaps for the Monochrome conversion but for its content. There is so much here I don't quite know where to look next. I would suppose it looks better as a monochrome but hard to judge without seeing the original image.   Posted: 08/14/2019 19:32:24

Hi Dirk. I am new to this group - look forward to hanging out here. Really neat photograph! First thing I enjoy is the photo-journalistic value it represents: juxtaposing of the harbor boats with the vastness and strength you captured in the industrial background is powerful. Love it!

Always hard to tell how accurate our photos are in these groups, but you could lighten or "Dodge" the foreground boats and harbor in general - but a little. But one thing you must not forget to do - remove the dust or water speckles in your photo: they are scattered across the sky. Sometimes I forget to get these out too, and drives me nuts after I think I finished my final! LOL!   Posted: 08/15/2019 12:10:34

Hi Dirk
An image of many contrasts and something suffocating
I like the contrast between the small part of nature and peace in the foreground against the enormous industrialization and pollution of the rest of the image   Posted: 08/18/2019 09:15:23

Dirk, what an interesting and rich content image. I like the way that you framed the industry campus, between the dark cloud and the ground. It gave me a sense of watching a historical documentary movie.:) If I must say something, I might say the foreground seems to have too much of detail that distract people focus to the industry park. I cropped the image a little bit. But it seems I like the original more.   Posted: 08/30/2019 23:11:38
