Gullfoss Waterfall by Gregory Stais

August 2020 - Gullfoss Waterfall

About the Image(s)

My wife and I were on a land tour of Iceland's Golden Circle, and the Gullfoss Waterfall (which is really spectacular) was one of our stops. It just so happened that as we approached the banks of the Hvítá River, we saw that beautiful rainbow arching over the river and waterfall. This was the best of many shots I took that day of that scene. The one thing in my mind that makes this photo stand out are the shadows of visitors in the foreground.

Note that the original photo was slightly enhanced in Capture One Pro. I made minor adjustments to the exposure and slightly increased the vibrance and saturation. Other than that, the image is exactly as it appeared on the day were there.

What an amazing experience highlighted with the colorful rainbow! I am curious about which settings you used and what type of camera? I have never heard of Capture One Pro so will have to research that. I especially love how the water is flowing and mist rising. It would interesting to see this with the shadows removed too. Congrats to you on this awesome photo.   Posted: 08/01/2020 11:55:50

Kathleen, thank you for your objective comments. I greatly appreciate your feedback!

This photo was taken on May 31, 2018 with my Nikon D850, Nikkor 24-70MM F2.8G ED lens at 24MM, F10, 1/320th second, ISO 100.

There are additional photos of the Gullfoss Waterfall and other scenic locations in Iceland on my website -

Also, if you are interested, here is the link to Capture One Pro's website -

I have been using it for a couple of years now and like it much better than Lightroom.   Posted: 08/01/2020 13:05:49

Gregory - I love the photo, especially the soft colors of the rainbow and the soft mist in in front of the waterfall. What a great capture. I am not sure about the people shadows. Could you have moved to the right and shot a bit more up the falls and avoided the people? Maybe not because the rainbow might have disappeared. On the other hand, the shadows give a sense of perspective that is good. Lovely.

Andrew, Thank you for your feedback. I appreciate your candid assessment.

You are right - if I had moved more to the right and higher up the falls, the rainbow would have partially disappeared. I have several other shots of that same scene that depict exactly what you are suggesting.

However, I will see if I can modify this image to eliminate the shadows.   Posted: 08/01/2020 15:24:41

Here is the same scene from a slightly different angle, but without the shadows in the foreground. Notice that the rainbow is not as visible is the upper left section of the photo.   Posted: 08/01/2020 17:11:04

You are right. the change in shooting location desaturates the rainbow. I do like it without the shadows of the people, thought. Regardless, this is a wonderful capture either way!   Posted: 08/02/2020 10:16:35

My husband and I have been there as well - but were not so lucky as to see a rainbow over it! I, too, am on the side of eliminating the people, but it is spectacular regardless. I love your website as well, and you've great images. Thanks for sharing them.   Posted: 08/02/2020 15:28:39
