Mating Season for One by Laurie McShane

May 2020 - Mating Season for One

About the Image(s)

It's mating season here, and I got a kick out of the antics of this poor mallard. He was showing off as best he could for the hen, but she wasn't impressed enough to even look at him.

F/9, 1/400, ISO 500, 400mm

This is a great composition and capture of the scene.
When taking such a shot, one has very little control about the background, but you captured it well. Maybe you could try and darken it slightly with the masking brush in Lightroom to emphasis the focus on the birds. You could even crop another centimetre from the top, but it may not give you the desired effect. For bird photography I always try to set the speed of my camera to at least 1/1250 to better capture movements.
It's a very good shot Shirley.

Ruth, thanks so very much for your comments. They are so helpful, and I'm going to make those adjustments. Especially, thanks for telling me about the 1/1250 shutter speed that you use. I need that guidance!
