Cuban Gym Class by Bev Caine

April 2021 - Cuban Gym Class

About the Image(s)

While visiting Cuba in 2016 our group stopped for some refreshments at a local plaza and while we were relaxing there this group showed up with their instructor and began what turned out to appear to be a gym class. I couldn't resist shooting and this turned out to be the best one in my opinion. I didn't do much to it as the lighting was perfect and I was lucky that nobody stepped in front of my lens.

Great capture of the boy jumping! Interesting photo. It goes to show how in other countries compared to the USA they practice in rougher environments like in this case on brick. Instead of on a grass field or fake padded astro-turf. The parents will complain that the grass is in tough condition but in CUBA it would be considered a luxury. I hope I can go to Cuba from the US sometime. It seems like a fascinating country.   Posted: 04/02/2021 19:32:47

Thanks for your comments. As to Cuba, fascinating is the understatement of the year! Any time you're ready don't hesitate to let me know. As a travel agent I've sent people there and the response has always been nothing but fantastic, especially for photographers. At this point although I believe there are still some trips going, I would try to outwait Covid at the least.   Posted: 04/02/2021 20:19:26

The story is great, and you've captured the action nicely! The ball touching the images' edge on the right is disturbing, so you might consider cropping it out entirely--it is just too close to the edge and draws the eye there as it is big and black. Or clone it out? This works well in glorious color!   Posted: 04/08/2021 18:31:54

Thanks Carol. I will clone it out before submitting it for a competition.   Posted: 04/08/2021 19:26:29

This is a nice image, and I like the story it tells. You did very well in capturing this image at just this particular moment.

I agree with Carol that the ball is too close to the edge of the frame and that's a problem. However I don't agree that it draws the eye to it. Our eye is always drawn to the lightest part of an image as opposed to the darkest part. And I think the ball needs to stay in because it balances the overall image. And there's a triangular geometry between the two boys and the ball, which is appealing to the eye.

So my solution would be that instead of cropping out the ball, I would suggest using Content Aware in Photoshop to add to the right side of the image (assuming that you haven't cropped in on the right side -- if you've cropped in then just uncrop some on the right). But I think it's important for the ball to stay in this image.   Posted: 04/11/2021 13:45:07

Love this image. It really caught the action well and the colors are perfect for this shot. I also think the ball should stay since both of their shirts are MESSI who is a soccer great so one assumes that the boy is being coached for soccer. But do add to the edge as suggested above for a better composition.   Posted: 04/13/2021 14:07:06

Great action, good story. I find it very interesting to see how people live and play in other cultures. You caught the action at just the right moment.

Regarding the ball on the right, I agree with others that it would be nice to have just a little more space between it and the edge of the frame, but I have no idea what might be over there that would also be distracting. Another way of dealing with it is to crop it a little bit in on the ball.

For my personal taste, the image looks a bit over saturated for me, especially the blue and red colors on the shirts, taking my attention away from the wonderful expressions on the man's and boy's faces and looking at the shirts.   Posted: 04/15/2021 17:50:11
