Skipping Along Downtown by J. Lanning Smith

April 2021 - Skipping Along Downtown

About the Image(s)

I had my iPhone set in camera mode this afternoon in downtown Asheville, NC. While coming out of a local downtown store, this young man came skipping around the corner and I was able to grab the shot. I like the way his orange hair is flying to show just how fast he was going. And his red shirt juxtapositions well with the red tiles of the storefront. He seemed very determined in his skipping. From a photographic standpoint, I would have preferred a narrower depth of field, but other than that I like the image and am wondering what others thoughts are.

This is an interesting image but in post processing I would have made an attempt to blur the background, just keeping the subject and the boy   Posted: 04/01/2021 11:43:34

Asheville? My old stomping grounds. This is a great capture--feels like Henri Cartier-Bresson!! I love color, but might want to see this in black and white to compare. It tells a wonderful story, especially the sense of rapid movement in his hair and legs. Maybe bring up the shadows around his face/eyes, but other than that, it works very well!   Posted: 04/08/2021 18:27:36

Thank you Carol. I have more from Asheville too that I will probably post here over the next couple of months. I always enjoy going there. It's a great place for street photography and it's closer than going to DC for me to get some really good, international cuisine (Ethiopian food and Indian food are two of my favorites and Asheville has excellent authentic Ethiopian and Indian restaurants. The next closest to me that I'm aware of are all in DC which is 500 miles away). I like the culture as well as the mountains and all the photographic opportunities that are there. About this photograph, I tried it in black & white but found I liked color better. That's a good suggestion about bringing up the shadows around the face and eyes. Thanks.   Posted: 04/11/2021 13:07:44

I love the fact that you have captured the essence of a little boy-never walk when you can run (or skip)with his hair and jacket flying. I also would lighten his face a bit, and try to either blur as Bev suggests or darken the background a bit or maybe a vignette just to really emphasize the boy as the subject. Great photo.

For me the motion, gesture, and action in this image is wonderful. You caught it at the exact right moment, with that red hair flying.

I like the way the colors of the tiles and the boy's red shirt complement each other. However, for me the background colors are a bit strong and pull my attention away from the boy. Perhaps desaturating the background a little would make it less of a pull. Along the same line, I think reducing the contrast of the background some would help. And as Carol noted, it would be nice to see a little more light on the boy to fix our attention there.
