Empty Streets by Karen Johnson-Nieuwendijk

June 2020 - Empty Streets

About the Image(s)

I took this downtown Providence, RI in front of the Providence Place Mall and the State House, usually packed with people and cars. I feel it symbolizes the isolation we have all felt the last few months. Sony a6300, 1/50 sec at f22, 26mm. I cropped and changed to black and white, upped the contrast and the clarity and the dehaze.

Perfect treatment for it. I feel like the story is readily apparent but also interesting with the combination of elements and the composition works well for it.   Posted: 06/02/2020 13:35:41

This is a well captured story of what's going on today. I like how you framed the street moving through the photo with the state house drawing my eye through the photo. I also like the B&W work.   Posted: 06/03/2020 20:47:35

My son lives not far from Providence and my grandson was married there. I can't tell you how many times I've tried unsuccessfully to get a decent image of that capitol building. This image is extremely well done.   Posted: 06/09/2020 06:30:10

I like the composition and the leading lines in this image. You also did a nice job in getting a sharp and interesting image. But to me, I feel like this image could be made even stronger. I'm looking for more contrasts I think and stronger black points and white points. I want this image to pop more than it does for me right now. But overall, I think you've done an excellent job with the composition and the sharpness of the image.   Posted: 06/11/2020 15:50:42

These are strange times we live in, when normally busy crowded spaces are emptied out. For me, the image has a feel of recent abandonment, empty but not run down, well kept, indicating there is normally a lot of activity in the area. There are still a few people out and about, at least one is wearing a mask, giving me a clue that this is a pandemic related image.

For me, the main focal point of the image is the traffic free street and the capitol building, the lines of then street lead me there. I think the image has a nice tonal range including both black points and white points.

For me, I would like to see a little more detail on the dome, it looks a little overexposed there. Perhaps, a slight darkening of the mid-tones would make the image pop a little more. Otherwise, I think the image works well.   Posted: 06/13/2020 15:46:22

Karen, this is a really good composition with the avenue sweeping us right up into the capitol. I think Victor's right about the tonal range and the need to do some work with the capitol and, perhaps, the sky behind it. It's almost as if we're seeing a composite where the left side of the image has the good tonal range and right doesn't. Maybe a little more work gets you a real winner.   Posted: 06/13/2020 16:34:03
