About the Image(s)

Walking around a street fair I spotted this woman getting her caricature drawn. I waited until it was finished to the point where she was recognizable in the drawing and captured the action in progress.
Canon 5D Mk IV; Canon 24-70 f2.8L @24mm; 1/100; f9; iso 500. Converted to B&W and other processing in Capture One Pro 12

I love these kind of shots where the viewer is seeing both what the artist is working on and the subject. This is better in black and white as you did it. I like that. And it's very well composed. Very nice!   Posted: 12/03/2019 10:04:55

The black and white works well in this, giving it a photojournalistic feel overall. There are two elements that I find distracting in a very minor way--the pen, which is so bright against everything so draws my eye, and the activity right in the center behind them. Because the table contents are also white, they draw my eye repeatedly. The only way to have gotten around this in camera would have been with an even wider aperture. But I do like this image. It shows her discomfort with having her caricature done very well!   Posted: 12/03/2019 10:40:06

I also like the black and white better. The canvas does seem to be the main focus to my eye, and then my eye travels to the person having her portrait drawn. Don't know how to correct that but it isn't so prominent in the B&W. She doesn't seem to be too happy to have someone drawing her, altho he has put a smile on her face in the drawing. Good seeing.   Posted: 12/03/2019 12:31:57

These shots are little tough to get "just" right. I go after them whenever they're available and, for me, it's always a question of "how close do I dare to go?". Could you have gotten as close as your crop shows? As Carol mentioned, an aperture wider than f/9 (f/2.8?) may have mitigated the background issue. It is distracting. Going with monochrome was, in my opinion, the right thing. I think it's much better option than the color image.   Posted: 12/09/2019 10:16:50
