White Orchid by Sandra Irwin

February 2021 - White Orchid

About the Image(s)

I took this with my EOS 5D Mark IV, my Canon 24-105 zoom lens, a tripod, and a cable release.
ISO 640, 105 mm, f/22, 1.3 sec. In LR Classic I lowered Highlights and Whites, and raised shadows, texture, clarity, and vibrance.

Hi Sandra, A beautiful flower image with a wonderful 3-D quality. I'm still thinking about whether or not I like the lack of context like stem, leaves, and natural background. As a study object it is superb. Nice technique. Karl   Posted: 02/10/2021 09:39:44

Hi Sandra, I like the way you handled the white flower. The sharp center when compared with slightly OOF petals, creates a 3d look appropriate to the orchid. I wish that the whit was not so burned out. Since you decided o eliminate the background, to my eye a severe crop would show more of the curves and subtle texture of the petals. I would like to eliminate the burned out areas, but such is life.   Posted: 02/13/2021 18:15:58

Sorry Peter, I disagree. There is plenty of texture information in the white. Your cropped image seems more burned out to me. On my monitor, there are very few burned out areas, and that is mostly just slightly across the higher parts of the flower. I would suggest just a slight bit less of the highlights for that.
I like Judith's comments below about the tiny faces in the center. Also this is an interesting shot on F22 instead of using macro. Is it focus stacked?

No, not focus stacked. I have a macro, but in my post-surgical daze, I grabbed my zoom of nearly identical size and shape. Didn't realize until I was writing it up in the end.   Posted: 02/26/2021 20:29:38

You have wonderful detail in the central region of the flower.
I love the tiny faces that appear there. Was this blossom removed from the plant and placed a brown background, or did you isolate the blossom in post processing? Can you show us the original?   Posted: 02/19/2021 14:12:35

I cut the flower off the plant and put it on a "black" foam board. I didn't crop anything but the board.   Posted: 02/19/2021 17:23:52
