High Altitude Dream by Karl Leck

February 2021 - High Altitude Dream

About the Image(s)

High Altitude Dream is a composite of only two images. I love the window seat when flying. I've observed that the plastic window material has a polarizing effect so that when the photographer adds a polarizing filter to the lens and rotates it, beautiful rainbow colors can be seen. So the first image in this composite is the view from the aircraft window showing a wing, clouds below and the colors caused by polarization. Take that image, copy it, flip it horizontally and butt the pieces together into a wedge. In Photoshop slightly warp the wing tips and add a star using the brush tool. Then drop in the second image of an astronaut suit that is part of a business sign in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania. At high altitude the brain may enter another world.

Hi Karl, What an interesting and creative image. The reflection of the astronaut is quite subtle. My only nit is that I would like to see see it just a tad less subtle.
Very well done.   Posted: 02/13/2021 18:22:43

I love this image! The symmetry and colors are pleasing to my eyes, AND the objects and swirls spark my imagination. When I first looked at the image I thought of the Twilight Zone episode, "The Langoliers". Reading your description of your process of creating the image was inspirational. I moved the image around on my screen to bisect it. Cropping out the left side produced another neat image that suggested the Astronaut was walking to the star. I rather prefer the half image.   Posted: 02/19/2021 15:07:26

I read the Langoliers -- a novella by Stephen King adapted for TV. Interesting comparison!   Posted: 02/21/2021 14:31:53

Very creative! Can't believe it's an airplane wing -- at first glance I thought it was a manta ray. Love the colors and the stars! Strange as it may seem, I think I'd like it better without the astronaut.   Posted: 02/21/2021 14:29:31

Yikes, is that the Twilight zone episode with a demon on the wing of the airplane?? I had nightmares about that one as a kid.

At first look I thought of those airplanes that everyone thought were UFO's. The ones in the desert that were top secret and invisible black.

Very creative. I like the polarization. The astronaut seems too real, maybe he should be not so sharp. The two stars are not the same size, is that to create depth?   Posted: 02/21/2021 15:06:11
