Holiday Light Painting by Karl Leck

December 2019 - Holiday Light Painting

About the Image(s)

Happy Holidays! The image was made by tripod mounting the camera and pointing it toward an LED lighted wreath on the front of my house. A Sony a6000 was set at ISO 100, f/18, 30 seconds. During the long exposure I danced with the PixelStick in front of the wreath bringing my own 'aurora' to a mid-winter scene.

Love the colors and hologram! What is a pixel stick? I know how to light paint, but I'm not familiar with that. Very fun. Happy Holidays to you too!

Hi Karl. Didn't think of doing anything Christmassy! Should have set that as a challenge. No, I don't know what a pixel stick is either. Interesting idea and fun image for the silly season! Have a great Christmas!   Posted: 12/12/2019 13:32:57

A PixelStick is a rod with 200 variable color LED lights controlled by a battery powered micro computer. The "Rainbow" in this image is one of the built-in continually varying color patterns that the stick can make. One type of 'light painting' is to project light onto an object. However, in this type of light painting, the light is used to draw a design in dark space. It's fun to play with this 4' long toy at night making incredible art patterns.

I think this is my favorite of your light paintings. You are an accomplished dancer. What dance form/rhythm did you use? As I studied your image an idea occurred to me: I want to try to represent various conductors beats (eg 3/4; 4/4; 6/8) using a light stick as a baton. The resulting image might just be a great way to teach conducting. Have you already done this?   Posted: 12/26/2019 17:25:22
