About the Image(s)

The Joe Pie Weed patch in my garden is in full bloom and attracting wonderful butterflies. During the last two weeks I have been experimenting with but modest success in photographing butterflies in flight. I posted one of the better images in DD 52. However, my favorite image of the Summer came about as a mistake. I had my Canon 80 D with Tamron 16-300 lens zoomed to 300mm set on Aperture priority, 125 sec; f 11; ISO 400 from a previous backyard expedition. In my excitement upon seeing a butterfly I forgot to change the settings and clicked the shutter. The result of my mistake was---"Summer Swirls".

Hi Judy, I'm busting my chops to get in-focus, action-stopping images of the great butterflies this season. Your image goes an artistic step further. It's a beautiful impression of a monarch (or relative) in flight. The light and color contrast make the image. You also caught all of the butterfly which may be accidental, but it's wonderful! I have so many flying butterflies leaving the frame. Excellent serendipity in capturing a great impression of beauty in flight. Karl   Posted: 08/09/2019 10:21:58

Perfect! I was wondering whether that was a butterfly before I read your narrative. You've managed to creatively capture the wing's movement leaving elegant motion trails. This image is beautiful as is, but what do you think of the idea of using more of the lead space in front of the butterfly to suggest movement toward that space filled with beautiful bokeh?   Posted: 08/12/2019 01:06:28

Hi Judith

Aren't some accidents just delightful! Beautiful colours and lovely bokeh. Marie's idea could work as well, and wonder if even flipping the image horizontally, allowing the butterfly to fly left to right....? Focussing on the stunning amber tones and the greens by removing the blue could be another option, but it is also terrific as it is.
Wonderful accident!

just love this!!
some blurs are just awesome!

The bokeh adds, but perhaps tone down the bright ones so that we can really have some whimsy time with the butterfly   Posted: 08/18/2019 23:20:05

Lovely! I like the composition just as it is. Will need to try that mistake myself one day!   Posted: 08/19/2019 18:22:01
