About the Image(s)

4th of July, full moon. I was hoping to catch the moon coming up on the horizon but got distracted photographing a beautiful sunset and nearly missed the moonrise. I didn't have a lot of foreground options and was in the car driving when I noticed this inflatable fireworks ape was lined up fairly well with the moon. I set my focus for the moon vs the ape though in hindsight I would have liked to have shot two photos and blended them. It was getting dark but thankfully image stabilization helped look at the EXIF and it is a surprise it was as sharp handheld. You can see from the original I exposed for the moon and then brought up the shadow detail from the RAW file.

What are your thoughts on moon photography and setting the focal point? Any other suggestions?

Good job on a beautiful moon (handheld!!), and such a contrast to the ugly ape. I am shocked you shot at f4.5, and only 382 nm that you still kept that moon from blowing out and the ape still in focus. I was sure it was a merge or a composite when I saw the pic, awesome you pulled it off.

I'd like to see the ape sharper, but I'm sure you've already worked it.

It's a fun, interesting shot.

I am useless at moon photography. Some show up nicely and some suck, with no rhyme or reason. Maybe its a great topic for our new Bulletin Board. Do we have anyone who knows moon photography?   Posted: 08/04/2020 20:31:09

Jason,

Very good capture, liked the post process, very good example of the advantages of shooting in RAW.
I have tried in the past and it is good to take two photos each of the moon and the foreground and merge in the post process.   Posted: 08/09/2020 23:16:41

A good fun picture and as moon shots go this is excellent, plenty of detail in the moon itself and I especially like the glow around the outside.

You've already talked abut the soft focus on the ape, and yes I would have like it more in focus. There is some side light coming in from the left which obviously is not from the moon, and I think I would consider enhancing this to allow a bit more light on the whole ape.
