Our special sweets by Abdo Allam

June 2020 - Our special sweets

About the Image(s)

For this month, I choose one of still life shot, which I just took early morning today I think 3.00 am,this photo to show our habit for celebrating our festival (EID ELFFETR). We usually we celebrate after finishing our holy month ramadan, and today is first day.

In this fest, we make special sweets called (kahk) as appear in photo with different flavors, and also dates sweets which is very common in use here in gulf area.

I made the arrangements myself using my table at home and some wood from old wood pallets in my work and make the color with coffee and kitchen torch.
the EXIF as followings :
Nikon D850 Nikkor 105 mm macro
One soft octa 60 cm with Good v860 in manual mode
2 pcs of A4 whit empty envelop as reflectors
2 big size of my books to guide the light
F/11 shutter 1/250 iso 100
A very little essential post processing in LR

Abdo, what a beautiful still life, and how wonderful that it is part of your faith and culture, besides just a feast for our eyes. I love that you kept it very dark. The powdered sugar really makes it! Were you sprinkling when you photographed?

It's a great photo, just as it is. If I were going to make any changes, I would think about making the dates a bit more clear, as I did not recognize them, and we eat a lot of dates. The flower is a bit distracting, but it does make a good triangle with the white powdered sweets, so that does work.

It's a bit unclear what the bottle with the flower on it is? Olive oil? I'd love to see it a bit more crisp, as the background disappears in the dark anyway.

Brilliant, I will look forward to others thoughts.   Posted: 06/06/2020 13:29:01

Excellent still life, nicely lit and the sprinkling of sugar makes it come alive, so much so that I want one! I love the fact you improvised with books and envelopes to set up the shot, plus honest enough to admit it.

I feel it could be a bit sharper, and maybe a bit more light just on the dates, but not on the bottle which it subtle in the background.

Just cruising through again and this is SUCH a great composition. Bravo on doing macro and that amazing city night scene in Qatar, and horses, and portraits and now still life. All your work is stunning.   Posted: 06/13/2020 14:23:53

I like the photo a lot. The colors and composition are great. My only minor suggestion is to brighten the dark shadow areas.   Posted: 06/18/2020 05:30:07

This is a very engaging (and slightly mouth watering) still life! I like the textures and muted colors of the various components. I think I prefer Jim's brighter version than your darker tones (or maybe a mix of the two, slightly brighter than your version)

My only suggestion would be to have zoomed out just a little to give some room around the subjects and so that the edge of the left kahk is not cut off. Seems a bit abrupt or unintentional as is.   Posted: 06/19/2020 16:30:39

thanks guys for your usual support , actually when you make photo more than 20 MB To compressed to 1 MB only , it lost a lot of details , in full sized photo it is not dark in edges , sure I make it dark mood but you still see all details from corner to corner , I have an idea if any one have account in 500px , so we can see each others photos in full size , it is a free platform so every one can use it , and also we can see more from every one shots .   Posted: 06/24/2020 05:20:39
