EXIF : Apple iPhone XR 1/1100 second F/1.8 ISO 25 26 mm

I was driving past these horses near my house with a beautiful setting sun and got out to take a photo with my phone. I love the atmosphere and backlight -- though the sun, while not fully blown out, is quite a lot of white area. Was curious to see how others would edit such an image in this case.

An interesting image, challenging for post process. What I would do is remove blown highlight which covers a large part of the sky and convert image in Black & White. Tried working on the screenshot (just a quick edit) but working from an original can give a very good printable print.   Posted: 11/02/2019 23:01:12

I'll give this a try on the larger image.   Posted: 11/03/2019 08:44:32

Sunil has nailed the sky in this one, and B&W suits it well. I would bring up the levels in the horses a bit so they are a bit more prominent.   Posted: 11/03/2019 05:57:28

Thanks Terry, good thinking.   Posted: 11/03/2019 08:44:48

Sunil did a great b/w, so I did a few LightRoom adjustments (Auto tone, then dehaze, texture, open shadows, drop higlights) and then I applied one of Scott Kelby's free presets for LightRoom that I've attached. I will add a second Scott Kelby preset as a second option. They are quite stylized and may not appeal to you. But it was fun playing with it!   Posted: 11/03/2019 14:50:54

My main goal was to get the horses to be more clear, since they are our subject and they were very hazy in the original.   Posted: 11/03/2019 14:51:47

And a lighter b/w version, showing up the horses...again from Scott Kelby.   Posted: 11/03/2019 14:55:48

Hi Jason, it's an interesting picture. I like that facts that you are capturing the nature, the sun and moon, horses and birds. Very nice.

In terms of the picture, the sky is blown out, and the horses are a bit steady, so the replace of the sky with dramatic cloud image is something to improve it. Which Sunil had done a great job to make a nice bnw picture.

However, I might want to keep the color version. Blue sky, green grass and brown horses will give the picture a good separation via color. That said, in addition to replace the sky, I might also increase the brown color on the horses a little (If needed, I might also reduce the yellow on the grass, to make the grass greener, and to make the horses pop).   Posted: 11/04/2019 09:10:50

Good ideas for consideration, thanks Richard   Posted: 11/04/2019 18:49:42
