I went out on the solstice to take some photos in the Wichita Mountain wildlife refuge (Oklahoma). Not only was there a beautiful dramatic sunset, but also a huge nearly full moon rise coming up over the mountains in the opposite direction of this image. I liked the winding road and sky in this scene.
I took another image of just the road which is also quite dramatic. You can see it on my daily photo website : https://jason.aminus3.com/image/2018-12-22.html
I played with the exposure (using graduated filter to lighten the road). Also played with shadow / highlights, and cropped off some of the uniform sky at the top.
Open for any suggestions on how to crop or edit this photo.

It's a wonderful sunset. The road looks a tad light on my screen. And I might be tempted to crop more of the uniform sky out to get even more drama, similar to what you have on your daily photo website road photo.
And I love that you haven't oversaturated the color, that seems to be a big trend, even in the top pro photographers.
Lovely, and kudos for going out shooting on the solstice!

Good suggestion on cropping more of the top sky. Will try that along with any other suggestions from the others.
I've also noticed this trend of super high saturation images. I think this is in part due to HDR processing which gives that surreal painted saturated look which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.
There is a fantastic landscape photographer in the Aminus3 community named Don Smith who uses a lot of those saturated colors but his compositions and scenes lend themselves perfectly to the effect. For some inspiration, check out his blog here : https://donsmithphotography.aminus3.com
Personally speaking, I like to experiment with different styles but tend to keep things more natural or understated in most cases.   Posted: 01/04/2019 05:07:58
Just visited your photo blog, some great images there, thanks for sharing web link.
About this image, nice picture, but I see multiple interesting subjects in one image and that is disturbing to me and also lots of sky space is covered in dark cloud.
1. Crop this image in 16:9 ratio and try.
2. Just the road in 1x1 ratio
3. Only lake area.

I also appreciate the different cropping ideas. I agree with Brenda that I think my favorite is the road on it's own. Though each one is a good composition on it's own.   Posted: 01/06/2019 11:36:27

I like your crop which is also similar to the photo I posted on my website (link at top) - though the sky was a bit different in that one.   Posted: 01/07/2019 09:50:44
I agree that this group has been very helpful in providing new perspectives, suggestions and techniques for improving our photography.   Posted: 01/09/2019 05:17:53

You also reminded me to have a look at some of the other groups and discussions out there.   Posted: 01/09/2019 05:18:31
Jason always has sunshine with his picture... :-) Nice work.
I was hoping to try my version of post-processing, but end-up I don't have time. Given the other folks have provided great suggestions, so I just gave up that idea.
The crop of Dave and the later crop of Sunil are great. I like them. But they become another nice pictures. How to maintain a signature of Jason? That is still a question... In that sense I do like to include the lake, but I also agree that the lake is a bit distracting.
I saw some discussion of the AI filter this month, even I am not that favor of visible filters, I think that it might be interesting to try the filters on this picture? i.e. making it a bit more abstract, on the line of the road, and the shape of the cloud?
Thanks for sharing your sunshine, Jason. Cheers.   Posted: 01/14/2019 10:30:33
Glad to hear the "sunshine" has been well received!
Although, I had not considered the sunshine theme in my PSA submissions, or thought much about a "signature Jason" image. It's a good reminder to consider our own styles and approach even when gleaning helpful feedback from our peers!
I have not played much with AI filters (is that from Luminar?) but will check it out.   Posted: 01/15/2019 04:59:52
