About the Image(s)

Shot with a Nikon D5100, 18-200 mm Nikon DX lens at 18mm. 1/250 f8 ISO 200.

I straightened the shot, optimized, cropped, and grudged it up a bit.

I was at a family gathering. Got bored and started taking shots out the windows. If you know where to look, you can see my reflection hanging over one of the windows.

The juxtaposition of the flat reflection and the angled street plus the mosaic effect of all the windows makes the shot work for me.

Dave, its great to have you in the group! I'm sure we will benefit from your vast experience!

If you had shown me your original shot, I would have told you it was a photo with no merit and to discard it! Amazing post-processing to turn it into a wonderful composition with such a mosaic feel and lines that keep us going around and around the capture! Can you discuss in more depth what you did to "grunge it up a bit"? Did you use any plug-ins?

Was this shot in Chicago? We have members from all over, so I think it will be helpful if we are all clear on where we photographed our entries.

Thanks for such an interesting photo, that you shot when you were bored!   Posted: 08/02/2018 13:53:36

Brenda,
The biggest boost to this image was cropping and straitening the vertical and horizontal lines in Photoshop. It was what I was going for when I made the capture. I did use a plugin called grunge. I've lost track of it. I'll look around for it.   Posted: 08/07/2018 06:09:45

Nice, interesting and perfectly post-processed image.

Would like to know how the shadow, the external stairs in the shadow, is handled. Thanks. Also Can you discuss in more depth what you did to "grunge it up a bit"?

It is interesting to see that you are almost hidden in the picture, which is good. What would happen if you would have found a way to show yourself clearly, particularly in a colorfully dress, so that there would be an interest spot in the mosaic feel image? But maybe that would destroy the whole mood. Don't know...Just a thought.

Cheers...   Posted: 08/02/2018 15:33:38

Richard,

I did use a plugin called "grunge". I've lost track of it, but will try to find it.   Posted: 08/07/2018 06:13:03

If there was anywhere to spice up a mildly boring afternoon, this is certainly the place.

Is that steam coming in from the top left of the frame?

As I stare into it, I'm feeling almost a vertigo sensation, as if the elements are undulating or moving through each reflected pane.

I also find myself seeing different things in the shapes. About 4 floors down from where you are hanging out and just to the left, there is a rectangle shape that looks a little like a fire engine with a ladder to me. It's kind of like finding forms in clouds only in metal, stone, and glass.

I'm with Brenda, I may have filed this one away and not done much with it, but your processing gives it new life.   Posted: 08/05/2018 04:15:16

Thanks,

Yes steam coming from an air-conditioner on an adjacent roof top.   Posted: 08/07/2018 06:15:21

Dave, I'm visiting from groups 5 & 62 and noticed your wonderful image. I love how the floors/walls of the building on the left, combined with the buildings on the right, initially made this feel like a composite of about 5 separate pictures. As I study your image the sky and the wavy reflections pull me into the scene. Soon I find that I'm seeing an entire city, all via the reflections on the left and the buildings on the right.

I wondered if it would be beneficial to highlight the fire escape in the alley. This might add to the balance of the sky in the upper left. With this in mind, I tried slightly opening the shadows and increasing the exposure of the lower portions of the fire escape. Your thoughts?

Oliver,

Thank you. I like your idea of opening the shadows in the lower right. Perhaps not as much as your example. I like like going from bright sunlight to depths of the inner city... all in one block.   Posted: 08/07/2018 05:41:52

I hadn't noticed the fire escape before, so I like Oliver's idea of giving it a little more light. And I hadn't seen the steam before...this is a really a pic with so much interesting areas.   Posted: 08/08/2018 17:56:45

From a beginners point of view I got lost. I didn't see anything drawing my eye. I love the picture but didn't know where to look. I read that others found things that I didn't even see. Guess I will learn as I progress in this group.   Posted: 08/11/2018 11:56:48

Alan, its definitely a photo with a lot of complexity! I agree there is a lot going on.   Posted: 08/11/2018 14:04:08

Alan,

Thanks for your honest comment. Being a beginner has nothing to do with it. If it doesn't speak to you it doesn't. It's all about communication.   Posted: 08/11/2018 14:55:26
