Blue Heron Fishing in the Niagara River during the Sunset by Pierre Williot

August 2018 - Blue Heron Fishing in the Niagara River during the Sunset

About the Image(s)

Equipment: Panasonic Lumix G9, Leica DG 100-400mm f/4.0-6.3, Hand Held

Technical details: ASO 3200, 280 mm (equivalent 560 mm on a Full frame camera), f/5.6, 1/1000 sec, cropping and light adjustments in LightRoom.

Discussion: This is a Blue Heron that was fishing by the Bird Island Pier on the Niagara River during a sunset. I liked the orange hue caused by the ambiant light and the force of the current from the water going through the fenestrations of the pier. View at full resolution (9.8 MG on a JPG file) the bird and eye are tack sharp, unfortunately, the limitation in size and file size are not allow to appreciate this.

I really like the depth in the image. You have a nice foreground wave grounding and framing the image. The background wave also keeps the eye in the frame. It is nicely composed with the heron on the right looking left. Having the heron's head in the smooth water was a good decision of placement. My only suggestion is it could be a tad sharper. I do realize your soft lighting is adding softness to the image, but the eye and head should be sharper. This is a very nice capture with a wading bird in rolling waves.   Posted: 08/02/2018 06:22:11

Fantastic habitat moment for a Heron, however, will agree to the sharpness part of the eyes.   Posted: 08/02/2018 09:55:10

Pierre,
I really like the drama that the crashing waves adds to this very unique image. I see you are using a micro four thirds camera with the 100-400 pany. I'm thinking about this lens, do you recommended it?   Posted: 08/09/2018 09:32:17

This Leica DG Vario-Elmar 100-400 is a great lens and very convenient for wildlife photography. Very handy range expecially when on a trip. I also have the Elmarit 200mm with the 1.4X teleconverter. This second lens is more expensive but opens up to 2.8 without and 4 with the converter. This second lens is also sharper, combined shaking compensation of 6.5 stops, but is not as flexible as a zoom lens.
