Herons - 2 by Jorn Holm-Pedersen

November 2020 - Herons - 2

About the Image(s)

At the beginning of the corona-pandemic our Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, urged the danish people to "stay together by keeping distance". Obviously the herons have listened to the PM.
Fujifilm X-T2, 16-80mm/68mm, f/11, 1/1000 sec, ISO 800.

We have herons, egrets, and wood storks here in SC that, with the exception a few outliers, know their fellow birds and keep a distance from one another better than my countrymen do. Maybe a more pano crop, and eliminate the sky?   Posted: 11/08/2020 12:52:49

Jorn - Totally get it! I agree with Sanford, a tighter pano crop would serve this image very well.   Posted: 11/09/2020 05:59:32

Very nice image. I like the foreground element. I also like the overall blue tone the image has with the water and sky. I might have cropped a bird off on each end.   Posted: 11/10/2020 20:38:07

I like the capture details of this image Jorn, level horizon, toning I presume was due to the time of day when you were there. A lot of the foreground is un-necessary to the image, so I agree with the others that a panoramic image would be stronger. Reading your intention to show the herons practising social distancing, I feel the two birds on the extreme edges help show this, so I would leave them in, sorry Jay.   Posted: 11/17/2020 17:40:22

Jorn, you've gotten some great input here and I can't add much more. I might crop the bird on the far left out, reducing the symmetry of the birds. I love the silhouettes of the birds and the phrase "stay together by keeping distance". It works for this image.   Posted: 11/19/2020 15:18:21

Thank you to all. I agree about the 'pano-cropping' it would have lifted the image.   Posted: 11/21/2020 09:27:20

Nice capture and you have a lot of wonderful stuff in this image! First, I'd remove the tower jutting into the sky. You have 9 horizontal lines comprising this image and a pano crop below the reflection of the bird at right would bring these lines into balance. All but two of the vertical areas are rough, so the smooth water in which the birds stand compliment the sky. I think you have a nice image illustrative of contrasts here.   Posted: 11/21/2020 10:40:02
