White Dahlias Still Life by Heidi Egerman

October 2020 - White Dahlias Still Life

About the Image(s)

The garden is winding down and we expect a frost within the next few weeks. I’ve been taking advantage of the beautiful fall weather to take pictures of my dahlias. The grasshoppers have decimated many of them, but there are a few that the hoppers don’t much care for. This image was taken with my 60mm macro lens, converted to black and white in NIX Silver Efex Pro 2 and final editing was done in Photoshop.

Extremely well setup and processed! Your choice of b&w was perfect and the result is wonderful. The off-center position of the vase is offset nicely with the glass topped in the foreground. How did you set up the lighting and background for this effect?   Posted: 10/05/2020 09:15:47

Thank you Trey. I shot this in a photo cube with two lights although I can't remember how the lights were set up. I often take a lot of shot so I have lots to work with.

The background is a piece of tri-fold display board made of foam core. I have attached a large piece of black velvet fabric to the board. When shooting with the black background and plexiglass bottom I usually stop down two stops or the exposure is too bright. Thanks for asking.   Posted: 10/08/2020 17:24:44

Thank you Cyndy. I'll be sad when all the flowers are gone, but I have many images to go through and process over the winter.   Posted: 10/08/2020 17:19:17

Absolutely superb Heidi!!! Still lifes are wonderful to see, time can be taken in setting the elements up just right, arranging the lighting and then the processing. I know I am being super picky now, but I am only doing so with the best intentions for your image, when I move this image up and down on my screen I notice some little white spots move with it, 4 on the right below the flower and near the stopper and 1 in the lower left near the edge. Please don't think me rude, I'm just trying to remove some imperfections should you ever wish to send this image to another level of competition / exhibition.   Posted: 10/05/2020 15:38:45

Thanks Ian. I pulled the original PS image back up and since I use Smart Objects I was able to go back into ACR and use the visual spots feature in the spot removal tool. It was very slick. I found many more spots than you identified and I definitely will use this tool in the future especially with a very black background. I know about that tool, but don't always use it. Thanks. My image is now very clean. :)
Thanks again.   Posted: 10/08/2020 16:53:25

Beautiful photo Heidi. Great arrangement and I especially like the reflections you created. B/W makes it a more elegant shot. Nice work.   Posted: 10/13/2020 21:16:28
