A Lonely Seagull by Jorn Holm-Pedersen

March 2020 - A Lonely Seagull

About the Image(s)

I went out to capture images of the "dancing" waves so I was very surprised when I on my computer screen noticed a seagull. It was not intended but I'm glad the bird appeared.
Taken on Fujifilm X-T2, Fujinon XF 50-140mm - 140, ISO 200, 1/1700 sec., f4,5. The grainy look is on purpose - camera setting.

Jorn - The seagull makes the image. The only thing I might suggest is cropping so the seagull is on a rule of thirds point, not almost centered. I like the way the seagull is placed, with plenty of room to exit the frame. The waves do appear to be dancing. It's too bad there weren't some clouds. Good capture!   Posted: 03/07/2020 07:47:59

Good moment. How did you miss the seagull when shooting? I can't tell if you managed to get the bird in focus, but 1/1700 should have been enough. Not sure I like the vignette, but B&W works for me.   Posted: 03/11/2020 08:17:19

Jorn, I agree with Cyndy about the cropping and have attached a 16x9 for you to see what it would look like and the gull is one the 1/3rd line. B&W is a good choice for this so as to make the viewer think, envision, remember.   Posted: 03/11/2020 13:42:24

Our art that we call photography is a wonderful thing. With this image of yours Jorn, I really enjoy the minimalistic approach. B&W removes a lot of "color distraction" and makes us focus on the lone gull. The grain helps promote a harsh environment. No one is correct with our comments and we can discuss many aspects of any image for as long as we want, but in the end it is up to the individual photographer. I fully acknowledge what the others have said and yes, having the gull on the vertical third may be good, but respect to Trey, placing the horizon in the center or so close to it does not work for me. I prefer to see more empty sky to show a possible barren environment. You have presented a very strong image Jorn, very well done.   Posted: 03/16/2020 06:02:31

Very nice image. I like the negative space the sky creates so you focus on the bird and wave. Looks great in black and white.   Posted: 03/19/2020 10:28:07
