About the Image(s)

Taken at Katoomba in The Blue Mountains, west of Sydney. A friend and I have been trying for these photographic conditions for 2 or 3 years now. Pre-dawn and sunrise from this vantage point with the valley full of early morning mist/fog. It's an hour drive from my home and in the past we have never had the mist. But the first dry day after 3 days of rain provided the morning we were after.
Sony a850; Sigma 70-300 (at 300); ISO 100; f8; 1/750; cwa exposure and tripod mounted. Processed in LR and then a slight touch of Nik in PS.

Ian - I like the composition, the three sections, sky, land and sea and finally fog. Your goal was to capture the fog, which I do like, but in my opinion it appears dark and bluish. I did play around a bit with it, lightening it and the midrange headlands which I think are also a bit dark. Perhaps I've overdone it and it should be somewhere in between?   Posted: 05/04/2019 09:37:41

Thanks for your thoughts and comments Cyndy. This was just 1 of about 75 images taken that morning, in both landscape and portrait formats. The sun had not yet fully risen and was just staring to kiss the distant cliffs, so the fog was yet to have any light on it, so it was in fact quite blue/grey. Thanks for your processing suggestions, but for my taste, the sky and those cliffs are just a touch overcooked, but your thoughts are taken on board. Thanks   Posted: 05/04/2019 22:25:49

Great shot. Worth the patience for sure. CWA exposure? Google only gives me Chemical Warfare Agent exposure. Surely that can't be right. What touch of NIK?   Posted: 05/04/2019 09:38:25

Thanks Sanford. CWA = Center Weighted Averaging exposure. And in NIK, the touch was Color Effects / Tonal Contrast.   Posted: 05/04/2019 22:28:34

I like the image but like Cyndy I find it too dark. I admire your patience to get that shot!   Posted: 05/05/2019 04:44:02

Beautiful photograph Ian. It was worth all the trouble to get the right moment. I like the way you processed it because I think the darker tone adds some mystery to the image.   Posted: 05/05/2019 22:00:29

I like the fire on the rim and the darkside is okay with me. I would suggest to put a little more punch into the sky at left. What a vista!   Posted: 05/10/2019 10:11:13
