Red Crested Cardinal by Pauline Jaffe

February 2021 - Red Crested Cardinal

About the Image(s)

Attached is a Red Crested Cardinal, also called a Brazilian Cardinal. I snapped this little guy's photo last month, the first week in January when my husband and I were on Oahu. This little fellow seemed to be posing just for me and looking right at me! The Red Crested Cardinal is not actually a member of the Cardinal family. The bird was introduced to Hawaii in the late 1920s. The image was taken with my Nikon 5600 camera. ISO 200, f 5.6, 1/400 sec

I think this is a very nice photograph of a beautiful bird, one I have never seen before. In my opinion, the focus, lighting, depth of field, and composition are all well done. You got him in a great pose and I like the texture you captured in the bird's feathers and the rock.

My only suggestion would be to consider elimating one of the catchlights in the bird's eye.

I like your image and think it was well done.   Posted: 02/10/2021 17:36:25

I agree with Walter, this is a well-done image of what for me is a rare bird. The composition is particularly strong, with the bird and the rock making an X in the center of the frame.   Posted: 02/13/2021 08:43:17

You captured this bird in a great pose, he looks very confident and is showing plenty of character. I think the colour pallet and composition are good. Your use of DoF has created a beautiful contrast between the sharpness and blur in the image. Great image Pauline   Posted: 02/15/2021 15:09:41

Excellent image. The only problem I saw was the little white spot near the eye. It is distracting. Otherwise very well done.   Posted: 02/20/2021 18:33:19
