About the Image(s)

The photo was taken while walking in Boyce Thompson Arboretum. I was
talking to my son “Max, my puppy” and when I looked up I saw this male
Northern Cardinal looking at me from between two trees.

TAKEN WITH: Canon 7D Mark II ~ Canon 100-400 L AF IS USM lens

SETTINGS: 1/500 sec ~ F/5.6 ~ ISO 1600 ~ at 400 mm

EDIT: Plus 40 details ~ Crop

would suggest crop in on both sides, if possible, especially the right band that's out of focus and not attractive.
Or next time, take a step to you left, to give you a better view and full frame of interesting objects.   Posted: 01/11/2020 18:17:41

Pretty bird. We don't have Cardinals here so I love seeing them. Good exposure on the reds. Red is sometimes a hard color to expose well and you did a nice job. The bright trunks on the sides are distracting. Potentially they could provide a nice frame for the bird but as composed they are almost half the image. Also, stepping to the sunny side of the bird would have given a view of his eye and a better view of that red beak. The bird also seems to be soft.   Posted: 01/16/2020 16:38:14

Cardinals are one of my favorite birds. I like the way you captured the tilt of his head. I liked the vertical crop you used on the original more than the horizontal crop of the final image. I also think a closer crop would strengthen the composition. I have attached my version of a vertical crop with a slight vignette added.   Posted: 01/19/2020 09:09:11

I like the crop Walter has provided for this image, it takes away the distracting highlights. The colours are nice and great spotting to see this bird. Speaking from experience birds are not easy to capture....   Posted: 01/26/2020 23:45:57
