About the Image(s)

I photographed this flamingo in Chili at the Flamingo Preserve.

Technique: Sony a7r3, 100-400 lens with a 1.4 converter (560 mm equivalent) on a tripod. In ACR I increased the whites, clarity and a little vibrance. In PS I cropped, increased the detail, and used an impression filter to give the bird a soft look.

I knew I wanted to make this more of a portrait when I took the image which is why I didn’t worry about including the feet or composing differently. I loved the light on the head and neck of the bird and this is what I wanted to highlight.

An interesting subject and nice portrait. I like the lighting, texture of the feathers and curves of the bird. In my opinion you have a pretty good exposure with highlight and shadow detail.

For my taste, the image is a little too soft and I find the highlights of the background somewhat distracting.   Posted: 08/12/2019 09:37:03

Thanks for your comments about the highlights. That is the water and I was surprised at how much they stood out. I may try to remove most or all of them. I also appreciate your comments about it being soft. It started out as a sharp image and I actually had an idea to soften it. So, I appreciate hearing what people think about the softness.   Posted: 08/12/2019 12:20:17

I particularly like the way the lighting is hitting your subject. I like the texture of the feathers and the contrast of the black beak which is sharp against the feathers. The portrait is nice and quite a striking one.

I too, find that the image is slightly too soft, for my taste.

Thanks for your input. I was curious about how people would respond to the softness.   Posted: 08/12/2019 15:07:41

soft bird image.

the background, white spots around the edges, caused by the noise from original capture or introduced in post process?

didn't list any shooting parameters, but from original image provided, looks pretty far off even with 560..   Posted: 08/14/2019 07:34:59
