About the Image(s)

Up a narrow road on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, I was very much taken by the symmetry and size of this tree on the other side of the stream. The palms were blowing left and right and the branches of this tree were rising and falling like at sea. Rainy weather was coming, so light was very diffuse. I knew it would be monochrome, to emphasize the geometry of the trees, but did not realize what a challenge it would be to separate the minimally different hues of light green.

In Photoshop using the Man from Mars Method of applying LAB color mode curves, I was able to get decent color separation, and proceed to normal BW processing. Then the challenge was to emphasize the big tree appropriately. Suggestions most welcome in this area, as I am not sure I nailed this at all.

I understand very well the challenge to separate the shades in the B&W version. I must say, though, that you have succeeded very well. The trunks in the middle which are the focal point, stand clearly out from the surroundings. The gray tones in the lower palm trees are also of excellence.

If I should give any advice, it would be to make a vignette to focus more on the centre of the picture.   Posted: 04/08/2021 07:49:02

Thank you. I applied some vignette, and can try more.   Posted: 04/08/2021 16:41:31

Hi Dick; trunk, branches and leaves look a bit overexposed & overprocessed; but it may probably be your eyesight i.e. style of editing. I attached a re-edited copy which I'd like to suggest e.g. readjustment on toning, color balance, adding some details, improved sharpness, vibrance, exposure and made a smooth gradient. Hope you like. Thanks for sharing Dick and welcome to the group.   Posted: 04/08/2021 08:16:19

The stems of this type of tree are quite white, so I do not mind them being bright. I do mind that I lost so much textural detail on the stems that you brought forth in your processing. I shall pursue that. Thanks.   Posted: 04/08/2021 16:45:33

Welcome to the group, Dick.
A windy day will remove all thoughts of landscape or macro photography from my mind. You've done very well with this image considering your description of the conditions. The subject really stands out and your tones are are very good. Now, I have to go educate myself on the "Man from Mars Method of applying LAB color mode curves".   Posted: 04/15/2021 13:10:13

Hi Dick,
I assume this is a challenging task to convert to BW.
However, you did it very well.
For me, the trunk above in the image is too bright in my eye. It looks like a shot lighting at night.
I like the edit by Ata. I would go his direction in the post-processing.
But thank you for sharing.   Posted: 04/16/2021 04:22:05
