About the Image(s)

I have been on a cross country trip this past week and one stop was Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota. This image was taken in the north unit. I was really intrigued by the round rocks and the lines in the sandstone. I thought this image would do well as a B&W. Camera was Canon 6D with 24-105 lens, 1/50sec at f/6.3, ISO 200. I believe I was using a tripod. I converted to B&W using ON1 RAW 2019 and used a black and white preset called “Ansel in the Valley”. My goal was to show all the detail in the rocks and canyon walls.

Hi Pamela
One thing for sure you achieved your intentions in this picture, the details in the rocks and the canyon walls are very sharp.
A couple of things I could suggest
1. Change the crop to 2-1 so you can take out the top parts of the wall and leave more of the white walls and position the bottom rock on the left bottom third intersection lines.
2. Then I would use the dodge brush to whiten the white walls and then the burn brush to darken the rocks so that they stand out more in the image.

Hi Palmela,

For sure, you have a good eye for details! I like the repetition of the round rocks that makes a diagonal leading line. I agree with Davids suggestions.   Posted: 10/14/2019 00:09:56

Love the texture and detail.
I think that David's second point is to increase contrast.
In my eyes, the easiest way to do it is to increase contrast of the image in basic adjustment if the change is global .
I do not know ON! but in Lightroom and PS you can move sliders in the tone curve so that you can adjust Hightlight, light, dark and shadow individually .   Posted: 10/24/2019 22:25:45
