About the Image(s)

I have been at a photography symposium near Yellowstone National Park this week. This image was taken in the middle of the day at Mammoth Hot Springs. The trees have been killed by the hot springs and minerals. I loved the dark trees against the blue sky. Image was taken with my Sony a7MII, Sony 70-300mm lens. For some reason I was in shutter priority which I seldom use at 1/125 sec, f/20, ISO 100. I converted to black and white in ON1 Raw. I wanted to show the starkness of the dead trees on the white mineral mound against the blue sky.

A minimalistic composition that works well. I think you should do it even more contrasty by making the snow brighter. I am in doubt about the sky, but I think it could also be brighter, it is a balance between the contrast between the sky and the trees and the sky and the clouds.   Posted: 05/13/2019 02:38:11

I like the contrast of the trees against the snow. There are interesting patterns on the trees on the right. I almost see 2 different stories here. They could be cropped as two different images and create a nice montage. There is good detail on the snow too.   Posted: 05/13/2019 14:52:28

I really liked the Mammoth Hot Springs area of Yellowstone, particularly the terraces. This is a really stark scene and, I think, is perfect for a mono image. I think I might have cropped the bottom to kind of "root" the trees at the base of the image.   Posted: 05/18/2019 11:57:17

A great image and a good one to play with in B&W.
Blue can become bright or dark during the conversion and I agree with the choice because it let the dark trees stand out against it.
There is also good contrast between the light grey of the ground, cloud above ground and high up in the sky against the sky.
A very effective image.   Posted: 05/30/2019 12:25:24
