About the Image(s)

My camera club has been doing a “Word of the Week” and in August the word was “smoke”. There was plenty of smoke in the atmosphere as there were so many wildfires burning in Canada and the smoke was being blown down to us in Washington State. I wanted to do something different and had remembered seeing images of smoke. So, I searched the Internet on how to photograph smoke. I made a setup in my garage and had a wonderful educational time learning how to get some good images.
I processed the original image in Lightroom and then converted to B&W in Lightroom.
Camera: Canon 6D with 24-105 lens.
External flash, 1/160 sec, f/8, ISO 100

Smoke photography is very interesting and I have done it myself some time ago. I like the sharpness and the clean look.

The top and bottom has very sharp edges, I would suggest that you fade out by using a soft brush. This will give the image a softer and more natural appearance.   Posted: 01/13/2019 03:02:01

I really like the intricate, silky patterns of the smoke as it rises. This image, for me, is far better presented in B&W. I wonder about the source of the smoke - is it a candle that's had it's flame extinguished? A wisp of smoke from a log in a fireplace? I guess I'm looking for the story?   Posted: 01/18/2019 10:07:18
