March 2023 - Silver lake

About the Image(s)

This is Silver Lake Vermont, just before Covid, January 2020. I was with a photo tour/workshop for the weekend. I love the colors of the snow and the trees. For myself, I have found that when I add 2 stops, adjusting for the snow, I need to darken it somewhat. it seems to be too much for me.

ISO 100, f8 1/60,
taken with Nikon D750 24-120 f4 lens, on a tripod
exposure compensation +2

I use Lightroom for post processing.
Crop, Mask using Linear to darken the snow slightly,
Dehaze then noise reduction

Photographing landscapes with snow can be quite a challenge! I frequently have blown out highlights when I do, you have managed that nicely. I'm curious, are the individuals ice fishing? The pop of red brings you eyes back to the pine trees immediately, despite the snow. and then you travel directly to the men , so the composition is pleasing.

won't it be nice t travel again?

These men are getting ready to ice fish, drillling the hole in the ice. Others on the ice were already set up but my preference is for action images.

I have been told to add 2 stops to compensate for the snow's brightness, however when I do this it seems to "hot" for me and then I need to darken.

I am fortunate to live on the East Coast and be able to drive for my travel. So many places within a reasonable drive.   Posted: 03/14/2023 12:10:59

I like the photo with the men and red fish house. Those two items grab your attention when you look at the image. Also a real sense of isolation with all the snow and then the mountain backdrop   Posted: 03/14/2023 13:00:36

Welcome to group 73 Barbara. I like the construction of this image and the way you have used the elements in your composition. The men and the hut balance the image nicely and the mountains give a good background and sense of location. The men drilling their hole provide the story in this image. I personally don't have a problem with the snow, I expect it to be bright and white. You have also retained enough detail in it to stop it just being a plain white space. Great image.   Posted: 03/22/2023 02:25:57

Barbara - welcome to the group. Yes, snow is a challenge and I usually add 2 stops as well, and it its till tricky. Just a thought - with the new mask options in LR you may be able to take the foreground and get a bit more detail - - anyway, I like the image and the red tent - there is a good story here and I think you did well in capturing it.   Posted: 03/22/2023 14:40:15
