Botswana Nightscape by Janos Demeter, EPSA

October 2020 - Botswana Nightscape

About the Image(s)

This nightscape was taken a few years ago in Borswana.
Pamateres are: lens: 16 mm, f/2.8 t=25 s and ISO 2500

That time I aimply saw how nice the sky is and convinced (50 dollars) the driver to take me out in the night and watch the lions 😊
Now I have the app to plan in advance knowing when is the best time to take the photo, how the Moon will be (preferably not at all), etc.

Janos, just beautiful! I'm surprised you were able to bribe him! In Tanzania and Kenya they are pretty strict about staying off the savanna after sunset and before sunrise. They could be fined a significant amount of money were they caught. Not been to Botswana, it is still on my bucket list!

Did you use a light to bring up the tree (perhaps his headlights?). I have not attempted a Milky Way shot yet and you did this several years ago....WOW! Very nice!

I have the App. Photographer Ephemeris, and can't quite figure out how to use it :-)!   Posted: 10/12/2020 20:18:41

Thanks Sherry. You are right, I used a torch to light up the tree. These days I use the app PhotoPills, very professional and good tutorials, but at that time I was simply lucky.   Posted: 10/18/2020 04:35:08

Interesting shot - light painting is a combination of art and luck and a lot of practice. So this image cost you $50 not bad.

I think I would have cropped it on the right up to the bright star top middle. That would have pushed the tree to the right and the Milky Way from bottom left to top right.

I like the sky and the color. Good job.   Posted: 10/15/2020 16:45:27

Some suggestions - I cropped the image, dropped down the highlights increased the blacks and opened up the shadows and added a bit of vibrance in Lightroom.

So cool!As Dave executed, a vertical or square crop would work and with better control over the whites. Milky Way processing is its own art, but its all about contrast. You have a great foreground and all the elements for a fantastic image.   Posted: 10/15/2020 18:37:10
