Narada Falls in winter by Peter Cheung

January 2020 - Narada Falls in winter

About the Image(s)

Deion: The picture was taken in Mt. Rainier National Park last month. The Narada Falls on Mt. Rainier was especially beautiful in winter. In order to capture the smooth motion of the waterfall, I used low ISO and small aperture so I can further reduce the shuttle speed. The camera settings I used are Nikon D850, Nikon 18-35mm, f/18, 18mm, 0.6 sec, ISO-31.

So how many layers of clothes did you have on? I suspect it was pretty chilly. As always this is a beautiful image. I love the way the smooth water draws you into the image and the snow covered pines. Im wondering how this would look as a B&W? Not sure it would detract or add. I would consider decreasing the exposure on the left hand side to see if you could minimize the blown out snow in that area or possibly crop it out. I find it draws my eye to that area instead of to the back where those trees are so pretty.   Posted: 01/10/2020 17:13:08

Another great image Peter. In all my life I have only ever seen snow for less than half a day and not as intense as this, or your images from previous months. I love the amount of movement in the water, my preferred speed for moving water is also around half a second, depending on the amount of actual flow. Yes, the snow center left is a little bright, but I also think that is just the nature of the beast. There is give and take in nearly every image. Well done Peter, in every aspect.   Posted: 01/13/2020 03:47:11

Great image, good decision to use long times! I confess I haven't heard about this place so I looked on Google. The falls are almost 60 m high. I wonder why you did not want to capture also a part of the falling water. Although the texture of the water+ice is itself beautiful.   Posted: 01/15/2020 07:13:59

Thank you Janos. The photo was taken at the top of the Narada Falls just right beside the parking lot. In order to view the entire waterfall, we will need to walk down an icy trail that was a little bit steep and full of ice and snow, but I managed to walk down to the trail with microspikes :) The falls is frozen and looks like this:   Posted: 01/15/2020 17:28:10

Peter, it appears that we agree that the snow is a bit blown out - ok, but the composition I think is good. Looks like good detail of the trunk of the trees on the right so balancing a snow shot with the range of light is challenging - nice   Posted: 01/28/2020 00:08:01
