The Seattle Great Wheel by Peter Cheung

October 2019 - The Seattle Great Wheel

About the Image(s)

Deion: The Seattle Great Wheel is a giant Ferris wheel located at Seattle waterfront. The wheel will usually put on a spectacular light show for sport events or holidays. I used long exposure to capture the beautiful light pattern of the wheel. The camera settings are Nikon D800, Nikon 14-24mm, f/11, ISO-50, 14mm, 25 secs.

A superb night shot Peter. Great use of colors, angle of the wheel and even the inward leaning building on the left & light post on the right balance each other beautifully. The only part of this image that concerns me is the bottom right corner. What's happening with that broken fence rail, horizon water line and distinct line joining and passing the two?   Posted: 10/14/2019 07:12:44

Thank you Ian. I didn't notice the broken fence rail :) I tried to correct some of the distortion from the super wide angle using transform tool of photoshop and left out the fence rail of the lower right hand corner. Because the lens was so close to the object and the object was distorted quite seriously that is almost impossible to fix.   Posted: 10/14/2019 14:15:51

I left your image for last.....mainly because I love the colors and that beautiful wheel. I struggle with the distortion. That may be just my hangup, but I am pretty sure it would be difficult to impossible to correct the image. I think I would be inclined to crop tight on the wheel to minimize the distortion. But I really love the wheel and would want to have that in my portfolio, just because it is so colorful, crisp, and clean. The effect reminds me of a fisheye lens and I know many really like that look, just not my cup of coffee (since I don't drink tea).   Posted: 10/14/2019 12:11:51

Thanks Sherry, I agree with you. The super-wide angle lens was so close to the objects that made the objects distorted quite seriously and very difficult to fix. I tried to fix the distortion of the people waiting in front of the wheel using the transform tool of photoshop but forgot to fix the broken fence rail after that.   Posted: 10/14/2019 14:24:56
