About the Image(s)

This image was taken just earlier this month (Feb 2019) while my wife Jenny & I were enjoying a week break at one of our favorite holiday spots, Forster NSW, about a 4 hour drive north from Sydney. This beach is most definitely not one for swimming at, but most definitely is one for photographing at. The rocks are amazing, huge and almost point straight to the rising sun. Details are Sony a850; Sigma 20mm lens; ISO 100; f16; s/s 1/4 second; cwa metering & tripod mounted. Exposure was deliberately -1 ev step as I wanted to capture sunrise colors in the sky. Processing in LR brought back detail into the shadow areas. Also a little bit of NIK filters applied in PS.

Beautiful sunrise. The colors of sunrise are always amazing and add to that the rocks and water leading you right into those colors! The water looks extremely rough there. But there are swimming beaches in this area as well, correct? I actually looked Forster up because this is an area you have photographed before and you always come away with really nice images. Thanks for sharing!   Posted: 03/15/2019 16:07:46

Nice photo Ian, an amazing time of the day. I'm not landscape photographer so can't really say much. I think if I had to give some constructive criticism, my feeling is that there's too much in the foreground, I know the idea is to give details of the rocks and the cragginess of it all but I think I would have gone further forwards to the edge of the rock in the foreground so that theres more sea crashing against the rocks and to emphasis the mistyness of the Seaspray that you can see in the distance. But of course this may risk sea salt in your equipment, which I fully understand :-)

Awesome color and image Ian. I love the combination of 50-50 foreground and vibrant sky. I was wondering what would be outcome if the camera position was little lower to emphasis more on distorted foreground.   Posted: 03/16/2019 18:21:49

Thanks for your comments Tuhin. From memory the tripod was lowered so that camera was around knee height, the waves were regularly washing around tripod's (and my) feet. I also took some shots from on top of that rock and others as well which also gave other results.   Posted: 03/17/2019 04:19:18

Very beautiful sunrise photo. The colors of the sky and the reflection of the water are beautiful. The big rock in the middle of the picture is a little bit distracting to me. The reflection of the colorful sky in the water is very beautiful so I think you can try to go forward to capture more of the reflection of the sky.   Posted: 03/19/2019 02:10:52
