Sunset, Shadows, and Light by Sherry Icardi

June 2018 - Sunset, Shadows, and Light

About the Image(s)

The Sankaty Head Light is a lighthouse located on Nantucket island. It was built in 1850, was automated in 1965, and is still in operation. It is located at the easternmost point of the island, in the village of Siasconset. We took the images at sunset, but in fact were facing west for the photos just based on accessible locations.
Post processing was pretty much straightening the horizon (a never ending struggle to get it right in camera!)and adjusting white balance to bring out the warm tones from the sunset. I have been giving the auto toning on LR a chance and it really does a decent job, not perfect but close, and avoids quite a bit of nudging here and there.

ISO 160 (auto)

EV 2/3 1/320 sec

Superb image Sherry. The way have brought out the shadow detail on this side of the lighthouse against the brighter sunset is great. My only question is do I see white lines running down the sides of the lighthouse and if so, is that a sign of over-sharpening? Other than that minor detail this is a stand out image. One other question please, EV 2/3, over or under?   Posted: 06/08/2018 04:06:54

You are correct, you see some lighter aura on the right, but the interesting thing is that I did not sharpen this picture . I used dehaze because of the ever-present fog that was rolling inland. Could that have created the halo? I went back to the original and while there is a slight amount of halo on the top not noticeable on the rest......I'll have to play with it a little to figure out the cause.

EV+ because I forgot to take it off from the previous shot :-). I have not used EV very often but since I started to take birds in flight it has been an essential tool when I don't want to blow out the bird's white feathers (-EV)or black feathers(+EV).   Posted: 06/08/2018 13:30:22
