Ice Bubbles at Abraham Lake by Peter Cheung

January 2018 - Ice Bubbles at Abraham Lake

About the Image(s)

Deion: Abraham Lake is located in Canadian Rockies between Banff and Jasper. The lake is famous for the methane gas bubbles that get frozen in the ice. The lake is windy and cold. I went there to take photos last week. The picture was taken during sunrise. Shot by Nikon D810, Nikon 14-24mm lens with ISO-200, 14mm, f/11, 1/25 secs. I used photoshop to adjust brightness and contrast, and reduce a little bit of blue cast

Amazing image! Beautiful area that I have not had an opportunity to visit. Sometimes the best part is the description . I keep discovering beautiful parts of this continent that I have still not gotten to see!
Crisp and clean throughout and the mountains in the background frame it nicely.   Posted: 01/12/2018 18:36:49

Lovely image, Peter. The gas bubbles are just stunning - assume you were pretty low to the ice on a tripod for the perspective.   Posted: 01/15/2018 21:31:56

Stunning image Peter, as always. Exceptional use of foreground and background resulting in great depth in the image. However I must ask, in the bottom right quarter of the image I see a series of straight lines (4 of them) converging near the center of the image. What are they? Fractures in the ice? Just curious.   Posted: 01/16/2018 05:35:12

Thank you for your comments. The lake in winter is a natural wonder. Yes I sat on the ice with the tripod with very low position for the perspective. There are quite a few straight lines on the lake. I think those are fractures between the ice layers.   Posted: 01/17/2018 00:53:08

Stunning image. I wish if you would have gone for focus stacking technique, the foreground bubbles would have tact sharp. I know it was difficult in such extreame weather.   Posted: 01/16/2018 18:20:08
