About the Image(s)

I took this on a trip to Arches Park in April of 2013. This is called cathedral rock. The time was about 5:30 in the morning. I used a Nikon D-800 with a Nikkor 24-70 f2.8 at 24mm and f2.8 for 2 seconds with an ISO 0f 2500. As you can see, I did some extensive editing to remove the road, darken the sky, and dodge the rock, while adding some saturation to the sky. I used PS and Nik filters for the original edit and then used the Topaz AI Clear to bring out the detail. This image was one the first night shots that took with my new at the time D-800 body.

Walt, you are not afraid of the dark in the wilderness. Is the only way to create this type of images. I like the way you treated the frame eliminating the roadway (presence of progress.....)You were able to capture some stars. It was a very clear night given the strong shadows. It is sharp.   Posted: 11/11/2019 14:14:22

Walt, I think the adjustment to white balance adds a wonderful "presence" to the image. Is there moonlight reflected on the rock?

It is always challenging to avoid noise on night shots. This shot is so clear!

Great Work.   Posted: 11/11/2019 18:46:07

Thank you. To be honest I don't remember there being much moonlight. I used some dodging to bring out the shadows on the rock, and Topaz DeNoise to reduce the noise in the sky. I really enjoy night shooting, but it is way past my bedtime!   Posted: 11/12/2019 11:23:58

Walt, Really nice image from Arches. I am heading there in early December and hope a get such a nice image. Your composition with a nice depth created by the foreground, mid and background. The dark sky adds some drama to the image as well. Bruce   Posted: 11/12/2019 21:11:05

Walt, As I look at the luminosity of Cathedral Rock, you have created an image that evokes within me a feeling of peacefulness as I think of a moonlit evening where I want to just be!   Posted: 11/13/2019 19:31:21

You certainly have shown fabulous skill in creating this image as presented - and what a fabulous result! I love its mood! Great work (that I couldn't even begin to match or believe I could achieve ever!).   Posted: 11/14/2019 12:40:49
