Vista House by Theresa Rice

May 2023 - Vista House

About the Image(s)

This image was taken on the way to Boise last month. The octagonal stone structure built in 1918 sits high above the Columbia River on the south side and is now a museum.

Shot on the Sony A7RIII with the Sony 50 mm f2.5 lens at f/9, ISO 100, and 1/125 second. Initial processing in Photo AI and Lightroom with Gaussian blur added in Photoshop. Converted to monochrome to simplify the scene and bring out the textures in the building.

Theresa, This is a terrific example of an architectural / landscape image. The clarity and sharpness of the amazing building is super! Like the semi S curve that leads you right into the building. I had to look it up on google earth and was amazed that it is sitting right one top of its own mountain. Monochrome was definitely the way to go. Any distracting elements were nullified by B&W and the building just pops! Mountains are a super backdrop.   Posted: 05/01/2023 17:34:06

Terrific image. Great leading lines and use for foreground, middle and background. I agree with Tom that the curve of the road is particularly lovely.   Posted: 05/08/2023 16:29:07

Theresa, I can just echo comments from Tod and Ted. This is a stunning landscape/travel image. The roads with the double white line is leading the eye to main subject. The composition and sharpness are spot on. A great image all together.

best wishes

Theresa, I keep going back to your image of the Vista House. Your monochrome is the best! My question is, is the interior as magnificent as the exterior? What a location!!!   Posted: 05/13/2023 06:52:20

It is, Tom. Half of it was shut down and there were way too many people last time to get good shots inside, but the interior also represents the more glamorous side of art deco.   Posted: 05/13/2023 09:13:33

Love this photo. Nice to hear you playing around various post processing techniques. It all good to me except more sky or less road?   Posted: 05/13/2023 10:52:59

Thanks, Mike. One of these days I suppose I should actually study some of Ansel Adam's work.   Posted: 05/31/2023 16:14:49

It is quite Ansel Adams in tonal quality. I like the composition and the lead in light as well as lines towards the house. Good PP.   Posted: 05/31/2023 16:13:36
