Snow Dusting at Monument Valley by Mike Patterson

August 2020 - Snow Dusting at Monument Valley

About the Image(s)

This was taken last Thanksgiving at Monument Valley. I wanted to capture the vastness of the area and was able to grab this shot of the mesas shrouded in a light snow. Did some cropping to reduce the amount of clouds overhead, which did not add anything to the photo, as well as some adjustments in Lightroom to bring out the colors.

Wow! What an unusual occurrence to get to photograph! It looks like it was snowing fairly hard. I think the foreground does a good job of showing the terrain and grounding the mountains. Cropping out part of the sky was,in my opinion, a good call too.   Posted: 08/05/2020 23:56:55

I like the composition, especially the layout of monument rocks. The layout captured the impotant landmarks there. It is very difficult to present the snow storm, unless you have some foreground images like sheep covered with snow. It could be mistaken with foggy or sand stome, etc. I like to cropped off a bit sky to balance the photo. Good shot.   Posted: 08/06/2020 11:50:27

I like the choice of panorama for the presentation. I might drop a gradient from the top and darken it a little to allow the eyes to focus even more on the mesas.   Posted: 08/07/2020 06:40:52

What a great capture. I like the composition but would explore reducing the amount of sky by 40-50% and bring more attention to the mesa. I think it is perfect as a panorama.   Posted: 08/09/2020 10:33:40

Lucky you to catch such a rare shot. Being out there probably wasn't just luck though, but preparedness.
I like the idea of a neutral density gradient too. I wonder if it would bring some detail into those clouds. It definitely would keep my eyes from leaving the mesas and their color and details.
Nice capture.   Posted: 08/31/2020 01:54:01
