Winter at Bryce Canyon NP by John Zhu

January 2020 - Winter at Bryce Canyon NP

About the Image(s)

We spent a week at Brian Head area and stopped by Bryce Canyon NP twice. During first trip the snow was so heavy we could not even see the pillars inside the canyon. But during the second trip we did captured some good shots. The winter is so cold there, we have to give up the plan to shoot the sunrise photo, maybe some other time.

It was taken with Z7 with three HDR shots on a tripod, f16, iso100.

Gorgeous shot! The reddish hoodoos against the white snow really make this image pop. Your composition also provides a perfect depiction of Bryce. Having been there myself just in the fall, I agree that it's extremely cold! Your feet get numb, your face gets numb, your hands get numb. Too bad you had to give up on your sunrise photos. Look on the bright side: Maybe it was so cloudy that a sunrise shot wouldn't have worked anyway.   Posted: 01/06/2020 07:46:46

It was a great experience to be there with snowy winter. I wish I could live close to those places. Thanks for your advises and comments.   Posted: 01/06/2020 13:22:17

Razor sharp! Fantastic job! The snow is so white against the orange hoodoos. They should be selling this print in the park gift shops. It doesn't get any better!

I went once the 1st of Jan and the temps in the morning were -17. I didn't leave the hotel till mid-morning for fear of messing up the rental car. haha

I did try to get a sunrise shot there and the clouds did not cooperate. We were there in March. It was cold, but doable. However, I like the snow on the hoodoos which makes me want to go back in the winter... I think... lol. Nice job.   Posted: 01/23/2020 09:54:12

That region has lots of interesting places for landscape photography, save lots of efforts for travel abroad.   Posted: 01/23/2020 19:10:19

Oh John! I am so jealous! Gorgeous lighting and perfect amount of red rock and white snow, perfectly shot and processed. Great job. I might take the small piece of hoodoo on the bottom left out. Or, add a couple more there for a leading line in.
I agree it's worthy of gift shop sales.   Posted: 01/23/2020 21:17:34
