Ghost Riders in the Sky by Mike Patterson

October 2019 - Ghost Riders in the Sky

About the Image(s)

We were driving through Northern New Mexico the last week of September, south of the Colorado border and stopped for a picnic lunch at Echo Canyon in the Georgia O’Keeffe country. After lunch, I looked across the highway and spotted this unusual cloud formation drifting toward a butte. Maybe it’s an overactive imagination but the clouds looked like ghosts, especially the one in front, reminding me of the old western ballad “Ghost Riders in the Sky.” I grabbed a few images before the clouds dissipated. I like the contrast in colors between the deep blues, vibrant whites and colorful cliffs.

Shot with a Canon 7D using a 24-70mm lens at 59mm. I used an ISO400 at F/11 at 1/160 second. Basic processing in Lightroom.

My overactive imagination sees a hand reaching for the tiny little wisp of a cloud over the butte. The contrasting colors make for a striking, yet simple, image. The only thing I might try would be to deepen the shadows in the butte to create a greater sense of depth.   Posted: 10/02/2019 14:48:38

I like the color and well balanced composition. The landscape reminds us the beauty of America west: southern CA, AZ, and NM. I wish I can understand more of your story to appreciate more of your work. The simplicity make this presentation beautiful.   Posted: 10/10/2019 13:33:38

I think I have taken this butte as well. haha I like the crisp colors and the composition. The clouds look like they are being sucked out of the photo to me. haha You might remove the plane trail over to the left of the clouds. I really like the yellow in the bottom of the butte. You captured the beauty of New Mexico perfectly.   Posted: 10/18/2019 18:01:03
