Sunset from east of San Diego by John Zhu

August 2019 - Sunset from east of San Diego

About the Image(s)

At 4000+ feet east of San Diego, facing west towards Pacific. Three shots of HDR at f9.0 iso1000 exposure 4+- seconds. It's one and half hour away from ocean.

Both LR and PS were used and that is part of my normal flow.

Gorgeous view of the sunset. Great exposure, especially considering you had to contend with a darker foreground and very bright horizon.   Posted: 08/14/2019 08:05:54

You pinpoint the right spot, with HDR the sky would be too bright. But I heard complaints on HDR, and some suggests no HDR for any photography. Thanks.   Posted: 08/14/2019 17:33:10

I love all the layers in this photo. It kind of has a rainbow feel even though the colors are not in the correct order. Nice job!   Posted: 08/14/2019 14:37:50

You really made this landscape look magical with the layers and colors! I love the haze over the mountains. I'm wondering if filling in those lighter spots at the bottom with some green might allow your eye to move more easily to the back? I seem to want to see what is in the light spots. I did just a quick cloning of those spots. I think it's a beautiful shot!   Posted: 08/16/2019 20:49:16

Agree with others--well done. If it were mine I might darken the sky. It's so intense that my eyes keep going to it rather than the rest of the picture.   Posted: 08/17/2019 09:57:30

John, it is really a lovely shot. I love all those layers.
I think you did a great edit on this and the HDR isn't overdone. Good job.   Posted: 08/29/2019 18:30:51

Yes, I am trying not to overdone HDRs. It's necessary to use HDR especially for those like me, too lazy to use graduating filter. Thanks!   Posted: 08/29/2019 23:16:48
