Abandoned Cabin in Snow by Nancie Clark

June 2018 - Abandoned Cabin in Snow

About the Image(s)

I dug back into some Canon T2i photos. I took this outside of Bryce National Park on the way to Kodachrome Canyon, I believe. It was a pull off the side of the road shot.

I like the color of the cabin and the rocks against the snow. I dodged some shadows and cloned out some larger scraggly weeds. Any other suggestions?

Terrific shot! Love the way you placed the cabin off-center. You also captured the brightness of the snow. You were there so you know better what the scene looked like but the shadows look a tad too blue. I also wonder if you've slightly oversaturated. These are minor points. You've done a great job -- and certainly have a perfectly clear focal point in the cabin.   Posted: 06/08/2018 13:36:54

Thanks Mike! I actually was looking at the shadows and thinking that, but don't know how to fix it? I backed off on saturation. The house and brown trees, don't look too much. I can try and lasso and lower saturation on the rocks, but they are naturally pretty red. I just noticed a cloning repeat in the bottom left corner. Will have to fix that.   Posted: 06/12/2018 21:01:57

Here's an idea: Paint over the area with the shadows with your adjustment brush and then slightly bump up your temp slider to increase the warmth. Don't know if this would work but just a thought. Good luck!   Posted: 06/18/2018 07:14:02

Well balanced and good depth. Good shot. The only thing I would do is to make the front house smaller to enhance the grand/vast feeling.   Posted: 06/15/2018 11:57:31

Thank you John! I may have another shot with the house smaller and more foreground. I loved the horizontal pattern of the wood house with the vertical of the roof, so I made it the focal point in this shot. Thanks so much!   Posted: 06/16/2018 22:26:32

The lighting in the scene works perfectly to highlight the cliffs above the house and the front of the house, really making them stand out against all the shadows. With the short highlights on top of the hillside and along the left, the light frames and focuses on the subject. The shape of the hillside forms leading lines also leading down to it. All in all, a very strong composition.

If the color of the shadows concern you, could you modify it with split toning? (Not something I've done much of, but it might be worth a try.)   Posted: 06/25/2018 06:46:49

That is a beautiful shot! Nice composition and clarity throughout. The beautifully lit red hoodoos(?) and the cabin with its great textures and lines both draw the eye. I would suggest maybe reducing the saturation of the background, or maybe just toning down the blue shadows as I feel it competes with your subject (cabin) a bit.   Posted: 06/25/2018 16:54:54

I like the composition, so I took the photo into PS Camera Raw. I increased the yellow temp slider to +67, decreased contrast and saturation, and increased clarity. See what you think.   Posted: 06/25/2018 20:13:30

Wow!!! what a shot. I agree the shadows need pulling detail out. And I like Marla's copy too. I wanted to see more in the roof and the rock shadows. They are red I know.
I just wondered why you aren't still using this camera??? As the shot is very stunning. Great catch.   Posted: 06/29/2018 02:35:46
